Editorials

Page history last edited by Lori 5 mos ago

Another part of the assignment is to find pro and con newspaper editorials at the time of the verdict.  For cases from the mid-1980s to present, search the database Chicagoland Newspapers [If you are not accessing this page in the Library, then you will have to type in your library card number].  When you are in the database, click onto the "Local Papers" link, and, on the next page, put a check mark by Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune to search both papers at the same time.

In the Chicagoland Newspapers database, you can search by case name or by topic.  For example, search Vernonia and supreme court in All Text, and then, choose Section from the second drop down box on the page, and type in editorial there.  If you want to search by topic, like internet filters and supreme court put that in the All Text box, and limit by Section--Editorial to only get editorials about the decision.  If you receive too many articles, you can limit your search by year.

For older cases, use the databases Chicago Tribune Historical Archive or Historical New York Times  [you will have to scroll down the page to get to the Historical New York Times database or just leave the Setting on "All" when you are in the database].  Searching by topic or a unique keyword is probably the best with these databases, and limiting by year will help reduce the number of results.

For example, for the case of Engel v. Vitale, try a topic search of school prayer and supreme court, and limit year to 1962. Review the results, and look for titles like "Letter to the Editor."  Look for an article that takes a side on the issue instead of just reporting the facts of the case.
