Finding Newspaper Articles

Page history last edited by Lori 4 years, 10 months ago

If you want to read a reaction to your case at the time it was decided, you can access newspaper articles and editorials.    [If you are not accessing this page in the Library, then you will have to type in your Park Ridge Library card number to access any of the following databases].

For older cases, use the databases  Historical Chicago Tribune  (coverage from 1849-1995) or Historical New York Times  (coverage from 1851-2014).  You can search both newspapers at the same time by clicking on the "Historical Newspapers databases" link at the top of the page.  Searching by topic or a unique keyword is probably the best with these databases, and limiting by year will help reduce the number of results.

For example, for the case of Engel v. Vitale, click on Advanced Search and type in school prayer and supreme court. Scroll down and limit by Publication date by choosing Specific date range.  Just type 1962 in the year box for both start and end dates and keep "Any Month" and "Any Day" for the other two boxes.  Scroll down a little more, and in the Document type box, chose Editorial and Letter to editor.  Review the results, and try to find articles that take a side on the issue instead of just reporting the facts of the case.

For cases from the mid-1980s to present, search the database  Proquest Newstream.  (You can also search from within the Historical Chicago Tribune or Historical New York Times links.  Click onto "All databases" once you log in.)

Let's search by topic by using the 2010 case McDonald v. Chicago.  Click on Advanced Search and in the first box, type in McDonald v. Chicago  and supreme court.  Scroll down, choose limit by Publication date and choose Specific date range year 2010.  Scroll down some more, and in the Document type box, chose Editorial and Letter to editor.  Review the results, and try to find articles that take a side on the issue instead of just reporting the facts of the case.

With all of the above searches, if you find an article that you need, you can email it to yourself or print it out.
